6 beginner-friendly hiking destinations, according to Pinoy mountaineering influencers

So you want to get into mountain climbing. Hiking can be daunting for those who haven't done it before but once you reach that peak, you'll be treated with a view unlike any other.

Like with any trip, hiking takes a serious amount of planning because not all climbs are easy. Some are in high altitudes, conditions can vary vastly, and you might need hardcore training to be able to hike with ease.

But fret not as PhilSTAR L!fe asked six mountaineering influencers for their recommended beginner-friendly hiking destinations where you can go for your first climb.

Mt. Purro Nature Reserve (Antipolo, Rizal)

There are two hikes you can do in Mt. Purro: the summit hike and the river trek. Both can be done in one day and are fairly short and easy activities. If you are craving for a forest and summit hike, definitely go for the mountain hike first. There are some sections that are a little steep but the length of the trail is not that long to get an amazing view of Rizal.

This is really beginner-friendly for me because you don’t have to pack your hiking bags, just water because there is a restaurant in the main area where you can dine in after the hike.

Once you are re-energized, you can go and do the river trek which is a relaxing hike by the river and a great place to bask in nature. The river hike is ideal to do closer to sunset. - Natalie Tarin (Instagram: @coco.natty and @TheTravellingFoxes)

Mt. Batulao (Nasugbu, Batangas)

Mt. Batulao is a minor climb. You can complete the traverse within four hours, depending on one's pacing. If someone is a smoker or does not exercise at all—my group at that time actually experienced this—the hike will take eight hours, sadly. But if you have an active lifestyle and take care of your body, that wouldn't be a problem.

It's a good location to introduce someone who has never hiked or gone up a mountain because the trails are easy to explore, it has rolling hills to give that little adventure, and the views are just majestic that will make the beginner appreciate hiking. You can also opt to stay overnight because there are campsites around the area.

Mt. Batulao has two routes that you can take a traverse: the old trail and the new trail. I personally like to start from the old trail to the new trail because the old trail gives a little challenge.

Basically, you start going through the woods and there will be times you will need to climb using a rope to assist you when you start to get higher. The new trail, on the other hand, introduces the rolling hills and a 360-degree view of Batangas. - Jo Serrano (Instagram: @thejoserrano)

Panimahawa Ridge is one of the famous ridges in Impasug-ong because of the breathtaking view. It is a beginner-friendly hike because of the easy trail and it will only take you two to three hours to reach the peak. And if you are lucky enough, you can witness and experience the beautiful sea of clouds in Panimahawa Ridge. - Paul Sabuero (Instagram: @beautipaull)

Nagpatong Rock Formation (Tanay, Rizal)

Another destination 1.5 hours from the city, Nagpatong is an easy hike if you are not scared of heights. The trek is only around 2 km and there is only a 10-15 minute section of a slightly steep incline.

There are some sections where you need to go on all fours as it can be quite rocky. But overall, it is a fun and challenging enough hike which is perfect for beginners if they want to experience different scenarios in a short hike.
Most of the trail is covered under trees so you can hike any time of the day without feeling too warm.

The last section by Nagpatong Rock, you have to climb a steep ladder to get an amazing view of the area. Another great option for beginners as you can also buy snacks and food just by Nagpatong Rock. - Natalie Tarin (Instagram: @coco.natty and @TheTravellingFoxes)

Mt. Kulis (Tanay, Rizal)

I'd suggest Mt. Kulis for a beginner-friendly hike. It is under Fresno Agro Forestry and Eco Tourist Campsite where they offer other destinations nearby the mountain.

The summit itself can be reached in less than 30 minutes via hiking and you also have the option to take the 4x4 ride.

Aside from Mt. Kulis, they also offer other destinations like Sambong Peak(Heart Peak), Noah's Ark, Spider Web, Hanging Bridge, and Lionhouse Falls. All mentioned destinations are IG-worthy those are features that make Mt. Kulis beginner-friendly. - JL Lopez (Instagram: @KaratistangBundokero)

Lampanag Ridge (Sitio Kibuwa, Impasug-Ong, Bukidnon)

Lampanag Ridge is a famous ridge because of the New Zealand-vibe view. It is also a beginner-friendly hike because it will take two to three hours to reach the campsite though it is an open trail, so better prepare an umbrella or anything that can cover you from the sun.

It is a perfect camping adventure for friends because of the sea of clouds (if you are lucky) and star gazing at night. The adventure does not stop there because there is a nearby falls called Tugisan Falls where you can swim, relax and enjoy nature. - Paul Sabuero (Instagram: @beautipaull)
