End of an era: Sony discontinues production of PS4 Pro in Japan

As Sony continues to ramp up the production of the PlayStation 5, it seems like the next-gen’s predecessor has finally reached its inevitable end following a report that the tech company has discontinued the production of some PS4 models in Japan.

According to Japanese gaming news outlet GameWatch, Sony Interactive Entertainment has discontinued the production of the PS4 Slim (CUH-2000 series) and the top-spec PS4 Pro (CUH-7000 series) while the original PS4 (CUH-1000 series) model is already out of production.

“In addition, the white (Glacial White) model, which is popular in both the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro series, and the large-capacity 1TB model will disappear as long as they are in stock,” it said.

The only PS4 that will reportedly remain in production is the Jet Black 500GB model.

Last Sunday, Twitter user Cheesemeister shared a photo of a notice from a Japanese retailer informing customers that some models of the PS4 will not be restocked.

The report said the termination of the PS4 roster is aimed to boost the production of the PlayStation 5, which continues to be in short supply since its launch last November.

"SIE plans to divert the vacant line at the end of production to the production of PS5, which continues to be in extreme shortage, and plans to shift PlayStation to PS5 at once this year," it said.

So, if you are planning to get a PlayStation 4, now would be the best time to do it.
