Netflix’s ‘Locke & Key’ to conclude with season 3

Netflix has confirmed that the upcoming third season of the supernatural drama Locke & Key will be its last.

The series has not been canceled at Netflix, but will get a proper conclusion since the third season was originally conceived as the show’s final chapter.

On Thurdsay, April 7, Netflix shared a first look at three images from the third and final season, along with the message from the showrunners on bringing this epic story to a conclusion.

“Once we began working on the series, we felt three seasons was the ideal length to bring the story of the Locke family and their Keyhouse adventures to a satisfying conclusion,” Cuse and Averill said in the statement. “As storytellers, we are grateful that we had the opportunity to tell our version of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s incredible story exactly the way we wanted. We’re keeping the magical keys, though, for our own personal use.”

Based on Hill and Rodriguez’s hit IDW comic book series of the same name, the series follows the Locke siblings and their mother as they move into their father’s ancestral mansion after his mysterious death.

Eventually, they discover that the Keyhouse is home to several magical keys, which posses different supernatural abilities. But they also learn that an evil force wants to steal and use the keys for its own purposes.

Locke & Key first premiered in February 2020 and was quickly renewed for a second season the following month. The third season was revealed in December of that year, ahead of season 2's airing, with the two seasons filming back-to-back in Toronto. Season 2 was released in October 2021.

As reported by Deadlne, following the breakout success of Locke & Key‘s ten-episode first season, Netflix approached the series’ creative team with a plan for a three-season run consisting of a 10-episode second season and an eight-episode third season.

That fit the vision of Locke & Key executive producers/co-showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill for how to tell the story and when to wrap it up.

Locke and Key‘s Season 3 cast includes Darby Stanchfield, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, Jackson Robert Scott, Brendan Hines, Sherri Saum, Kevin Durand and Coby Bird.

The showrunners are currently wrapping post-production on the final eight episodes, which are expected to be released later this year. Netflix has not yet revealed the specific release date for Season 3.
