"Run, Laal, run!"

If you're a 90s kid who loved watching movies back in the day, chances are, you have become all too familiar with this iconic line. It's from the hit film Forrest Gump but this time, with an Indian twist.

The 1994 multi-awarded cult favorite, which won Tom Hanks two Best Actor Awards from the Oscars and Golden Globe, is getting its Bollywood remake in the upcoming movie Laal Singh Chaddha

Acclaimed actor and Three Idiots star Aamir Khan is set to play the role of Laal, the Indian counterpart of Hanks' Forrest Gump. He has also produced the film alongside his ex-wife Kiran Rao, Viacom18 Studios, and Paramount Pictures.

Khan first announced the project in March 2019 and released its trailer at the 2022 Indian Premier League final last Sunday, July 31.

He said that Laal Singh Chaddha is a retelling of Forrest Gump, which chronicles the "extraordinary life of an ordinary man... through the lens of India's modern history and culture."

Its official synopsis reads: "With a childhood marked by a unique bond between Laal and his single mother, tempered with strong values, the story follows Laal’s journey of love, innocence, and destiny as he triumphs over life's many challenges. As he wins the hearts of those he meets along the way, he reminds us that everyone, even the most unlikely of people, has a story."

Joining Khan in this film is his fellow Three Idiots star Kapoor Khan, who plays Laal's love interest Rupa, and Mona Singh who portrays Laal's mom.

As seen in the trailer, Laal Singh Chaddha adapts several iconic elements from the original American film, including the main character's childhood leg disability, his wartime military service, and years of running across the country. According to IGN's report, the film was shot in over 100 locations in India.

Laal Singh Chaddha is slated for a global theatrical release on August 11, with streaming dates to follow.
