Broadway performer Laura Benanti opened up about having a miscarriage while performing in front of 2,000 people and “knew it was happening.”

The 43-year-old actress shared her experience of pregnancy loss in an Instagram post on April 5. Benanti said she was performing for a Broadway-themed concert on a cruise ship when the miscarriage happened.

“On Monday April 3rd, I performed on stage for 2000 people while having a miscarriage. I knew it was happening. It started slowly the night before,” Benanti narrated.

The Broadway star said that she was able to go on with the performance as it was not the first time that she experienced pregnancy loss.

She wrote, “If it had been our first loss, or even our second, I likely wouldn’t have been able to go on. But unfortunately, I am not a stranger to the pain and emptiness of losing a pregnancy. It is a path I have walked before, hand in hand with my husband."

"But this time we walked it alongside some of the kindest, most loving humans I will ever have the honor to share space with," she wrote.

Benanti went on to thank all those who helped her during her recent miscarriage and pregnancy journey, including the audience "for lifting me out of my grief for that Holy hour,” the actress wrote. She also sent her heartfelt gratitude to her band, crew, fellow performers, and in-laws.

Lastly, the actress and mom penned a short message to her lost baby, thanking the little soul for “choosing me as your home, even for a short time.”

"Patrick and I are so grateful for the family that we have, and the miracle of our two little girls. One carried by me and one carried by an angel-on-earth," she continued.

"My husband and I are heartbroken but we will move through this together as we, and so many others, have done before."

Benanti said that she shared her story not to ask for sympathy or attention but to remind people, herself even, that “there is no shame in this kind of loss.”

In a separate post, she additionally thanked those who showered her with love and support and those who sent her “messages of solidarity.”

Benanti starred in TV shows Nashville and Supergirl, and received five Tony Award nominations throughout her Broadway career.
