Anne Hathaway revealed that she had a miscarriage during the run of her 2015 Broadway show, where she had to play a pregnant woman onstage every night.

The international star opened up about her personal experience in an interview with Vanity Fair, saying that it happened during the production of the play Grounded, which lasted for six weeks. According to Harper's Bazaar, it revolves around a pilot for the U.S. Air Force "whose duties are diminished when she gets pregnant and suffers emotional distress due to the demotion."

"The first time it didn't work out for me," she said, referring to her first pregnancy. "I was doing a play and I had to give birth onstage every night."

The actress recalled telling her friends about what happened backstage when they watched one of her shows. “It was too much to keep it in when I was onstage pretending everything was fine," she shared. "I had to keep it real otherwise."

In 2019, Hathaway openly talked about dealing with fertility problems as she announced her second pregnancy on Instagram. In the caption, she sent “extra love” to those who were “going through infertility and conception hell.”

“Please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies," she wrote at the time.

Talking about the said post with Vanity Fair, she said it “would have felt disingenuous to post something all the way happy when I know the story is much more nuanced than that for everyone.”

“It was more about what I wasn't going to do. I wasn't going to feel ashamed of something that seemed to me statistically to actually be quite normal,” she said.

Hathaway now has two children—7-year-old Jonathan and 3-year-old Jack—with her husband, actor Adam Shulman. They have been married since 2012.
