A couple from Florida has been charged with child neglect and drug possession after their 14-month-old overdosed on cocaine in the form of pills.

According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, authorities responded to a medical assistance call about an unresponsive child in Bonita Springs and rushed the toddler to a local hospital.

Diego Tzoy Pu, 33, and Santa Lux Pu De Tzoy, 30, admitted that the infant took multiple pills described to be oxycodone as the former showed his drug stash, which had pills that tested positive for cocaine. It was placed on a bedside table that was easily accessed by their child.

"Just prior to calling 911, the child was seen screaming and crying with a blue pill in her teeth. Diego's open wallet was on the bed that contained the pills," police said, adding that the little one is now in stable condition.

"We have to protect those that cannot protect themselves. Thank God the child is going to be okay. We will continue to work with DCF to ensure this child is in a safe environment, free of drugs and neglect," Sheriff Carmine Marceno said in a statement.

The Florida Department of Children and Families is conducting a parallel investigation into the case.
