Seniors, PWDs to enjoy increased weekly discount on basic goods starting March 25

Filipinos aged 60 and above, as well as persons with disabilities, will get an additional discount on grocery items per week soon.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), on its website, announced that it has signed a joint administrative order (JAO) with the Department of Agriculture and Department of Energy on Thursday, March 21, increasing the weekly discount to P125 from P65.

The DTI seeks its implementation by Monday, March 25.

The JAO covers goods that "are essential for consumers’ sustenance, especially during calamities or emergencies," including rice, corn, bread, meat, fish, chicken, eggs, cooking oil, sugar, vegetables, fruits, onions, garlic, and fresh and processed milk.

Manufactured goods like processed meat, sardines, and corned beef are also covered, except for premium brands.

Non-essential food like cakes and pastries aren’t covered by the order.

News about the additional discount began in February when House Speaker Martin Romualdez met with the DTI.

The circular was released following his meeting with DTI Undersecretary Carolina Sanchez and other officials last Feb. 27. It came after officials were urged by the House committee on senior citizens, persons with disabilities and ways and means to increase the discount because of food inflation.

A joint House panel also approved three bills expanding the benefits of seniors and PWDs.

House Bill No. 10061 seeks to include other discounts and promos aside from the mandatory 20% discount and value-added tax exemption among seniors and PWDs, while HB 10062 looks to rationalize senior citizens and PWDs’ benefits and privileges to ensure equitable access to essential services, social welfare, and opportunities for participation.

HB 10063, meanwhile, seeks to put a dedicated section on the eGov PH Super App for senior citizens and PWDs.
