MVP at 76: Honoring the man who created the largest private hospital group in the country

When a man has a dream, will he take the necessary steps to make it real? If the man in question is Manny V. Pangilinan or MVP, there is no doubt that he will do whatever it takes to build upon the dream, and realize his vision for the greater good.

A respected industry leader, top businessman, and strong patron of Philippine sports, MVP celebrates his 76th birthday today, and one wonders if he even takes a pause to blow out the candles on his cake.

From internet accessibility for all, to providing athletes with a fighting chance for gold, MVP also built upon the idea to make quality healthcare available to more Filipinos. It was his vision that inspired the creation of Metro Pacific Hospital Holdings Incorporated, the largest private hospital group in the Philippines today, which has 19 hospitals, as well as primary care clinics, several cancer centers, allied health colleges, pharmacies, and a centralized laboratory. Such integration puts the best of the best healthcare in the service of patients.

“When MVP asked me in 2007 if we should invest in hospitals, I was very negative. I heard the hospital he was considering was in a very bad shape, and we knew nothing about hospitals,” recalled Augusto P. Palisoc Jr., founder and president of Metro Pacific Hospital Holdings Inc.

“But after working with him for almost 24 years, it was silly of me to forget that the best way to motivate MVP was to tell him that something couldn’t be done. Against my advise, he made our first investment in Makati Medical Center, and to silence the internal opposition, he assigned me to head and grow our hospital business. Fifteen years later, we are now the first and largest private hospital group in the country!”

MPHHI is actively seeking for more opportunities to make healthcare more accessible as it consolidates its leadership in the healthcare industry.

According to Dr. Harish Pillai, CEO of MPHHI, MVP “is an epitome of creative and empathetic entrepreneurship that focuses on nation-building through a strategic focus on priority sectors like healthcare in addition to other vital infrastructure projects.”

He added that the network included some of the best reputed healthcare brands that have all witnessed the industrialist’s single-minded quest and commitment to quality and service standards.

He also stressed the safe delivery of healthcare through an efficient and compassionate team of doctors, nurses, technicians and other workers. Their selfless service during the height of the pandemic was a true testament to the Filipino spirit of brotherhood and endurance despite incredible challenges.

Dr. Pillai also praised MVP’s desire to improve the country’s healthcare system, aiming to upgrade medical equipment, adopt new cutting-edge technologies, and develop new clinical services.

“The Board of Directors at MPHHI, under the visionary leadership of MVP, is now in the process of embarking on a new journey of total transformation to becoming an integrated healthcare provider that will pivot itself in active partnership with stakeholders to preserve and enhance the nation’s health status,” Dr. Pillai said.

On the occasion of MVP’s 76th birthday, Dr. Pillai adds, “The entire team of healthcare workers across the 19 hospitals and the holding company, wishes him a wonderful day and many more years of healthy and productive service to the nation.”

Whatever the future demands, MPHHI will be there, fit to answer the call of every Filipino. The network has made a huge investment in changing the e-health landscape to ensure that even while at the forefront of modernity, we are fully focused on our patients in our care delivery. This means upgrading every partner hospital’s information systems; electronic medical records; virtual care platforms; and dynamic portals.

The network will also help Filipinos adopt healthy lifestyles with wellness-oriented programs using user-friendly apps.

All this is inspired by the vision of MVP. The present and future of healthcare in the Philippines is constantly taking shape and is in good hands, indeed.

MPHHI is the largest private hospital group in the Philippines with 19 hospitals nationwide, namely Makati Medical Center, Cardinal Santos Medical Center, Asian Hospital and Medical Center, Davao Doctors Hospitals, Riverside Medical Center, Manila Doctors Hospital, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, De Los Santos Medical Center, Central Luzon Doctors’ Hospital, West Metro Medical Center, Sacred Heart Hospital of Malolos, Marikina Valley Medical Center, Dr. Jesus C. Delgado Memorial Hospital, St. Elizabeth Hospital, Manuel J. Santos Hospital, Los Banos Doctors Hospital, Ramiro Community Hospital, Calamba Medical Center, and Commonwealth Hospital and Medical Center. Also included in the network are cancer care centers, clinics, pharmacies, medical colleges, and a central laboratory.
