Woman goes viral after accidentally fusing her eye shut with superglue

A woman living in California had made rounds online after she committed a blunder that could have led to severe consequences: accidentally mistaking superglue for her eye drops.

In a TikTok video that has since received nearly five million views, Jennifer Eversole recounted the incident that had put her in the hospital while holding an ice packet to her left eye.

"Well, I've gone and done it. I have won the most idiot person award. My eye drops sit directly next to superglue and they’re the same size bottle and I wasn’t paying attention and now my eye’s glued shut," Eversole said, removing the ice packet and showing the sticky result of the accident.

The mother of six had to be rushed to the hospital via an ambulance. She said that her tears has been struggling to keep her other eye open as it forces her glued eye to move, causing her discomfort. 

According to Eversole, the incident happened when she was using the superglue to apply her daughter’s press-on nails. She then made the mistake of not putting the item away and instead left it on top of her bedroom dresser.

"I was literally like 'Why isn't my eyedrop coming out?' and squeezed harder because they were almost gone, so I could've saved myself if I looked at the bottle," she said.

When the superglue made contact with her eye, she distinctly remembered being afflicted by an "intense burning, really bad burning" sensation.

"I shut my eye really fast. And I don't know if that was a good thing or a bad thing because it didn't get on my eyeball that much. And maybe it wouldn't have glued my eyes shut if I hadn't shut them, but I don't know what would have happened. It could have been worse," she said.

Doctors eventually managed to save her eye by applying numbing eye drops and prying it open. The glue left scratches on her eye and blurred her vision, and Eversole had to keep it covered until it was healed.

In an update detailing her visit to an ophthalmologist, she was told that her eye was now "healing nicely" and had no more glue in it.

"I am doing well! Eyesight should be back to 20/20 within a few days and my eye is healing nicely. No major abrasions and I am very lucky for that seeing as so many of you commented that others have lost their eye doing this exact thing!" she wrote in the caption.

According to eye care website All About Vision, putting glue in your eye may put you at risk of irritation, inflammation of the conjunctiva, corneal abrasion, eyelashes or eyelids sticking together, or infection following an allergic reaction, bacterial or chemical exposure.
