An overspeeding drunk driver in Colorado tried to avoid arrest by switching places with his dog in the passenger seat.

According to a Facebook post by Springfield Police, an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling at 52 miles per hour (83 kilometers per hour) in a posted 30 mph (48 kph) zone.

The officer then witnessed the driver maneuvering inside the car before exiting the passenger side, claiming he wasn't the one driving.

The man reportedly showed "clear signs" of intoxication and ran away after being questioned, authorities said.

He was caught within about 20 yards (18 meters) of the vehicle.

Police said the man was driving from the city of Las Animas to the municipality of Pueblo, but got lost in the city of Springfield.

He was also found to have two active warrants for his arrest out of Pueblo.

The man was taken to the hospital for clearance and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of charges, including driving under the influence, driving while ability-impaired, driving under suspension, speeding 20-24 over, and resisting arrest.

In a postscript, Springfield Police clarified that the dog—which was given to the driver's acquaintance to take care of—will not face any charges, and was let go "with just a warning."
