The streets of São Lourenço do Bairro municipality in Anadia, Portugal were painted red after tanks from a local distillery exploded, unleashing about 2.2 million liters of red wine.

Local media reported that during the unfortunate yet bizarre incident, which happened on Sept. 9, an estimated 2.2 million liters or 600,000 gallons engulfed the streets and affected 2,000 residents. No injuries were recorded but there were reported road damages.

The local firefighters managed to block the flow and prevented the possible contamination in the nearby Certima River. The collected spill was then transported to the wastewater management.

Levira Distillery, for their part, expressed their apologies for the incident.

“We take full responsibility for the costs associated with damage cleanup and repair, with crews available to do it immediately. We're committed to resolving this situation as soon as possible,” the comopany wrote in a translated Facebook post on Sunday, Sept. 10. It noted that an investigation will be done to determine the cause of the incident.

Social media users were also quick to express their hilarious reactions to the bizarre incident.
