Dubai, Bali, Hanoi, and more among TripAdvisor's top destinations for 2024

Planning your travels this year? TripAdvisor has unveiled the top destinations around the world for 2024, with Dubai claiming the crown for three consecutive years. Meanwhile, Palawan Island, Philippines landed on the fourth spot of the trending destinations around the world.

The travel guide website announced on Jan. 9 this year’s best destinations to visit around the globe. The results were divided into seven main categories namely Top Destinations, Trending Destinations, Culture Destinations, Food Destinations, Nature Destinations, Honeymoon Destinations, and Sustainable Destinations.

For the third year in a row, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, known for its breathtaking skyline putting a spotlight on Burj Khalifa, luxe shopping, and the world-class Museum of the Future, emerged in the top spot for Top destinations around the world.

Following Dubai is Bali, Indonesia known for its picturesque beaches, lush greeneries, and soul-healing spas and cultural tours. 

Also included in travelers’ favorite spots is London, United Kingdom, famous for its royal and historic sites; Hanoi, Vietnam, known for its monuments and temples; and Rome, Italy for its timeless and stunning architecture.  

Cancun, Mexico; Marrakech, Morocco; Crete, Greece; and Hoi An, Vietnam also made it to the list.

On the other hand, Asian countries dominated the Trending destinations for this year, with Tokyo, Japan; Seoul, South Korea; Halong Bay, Vietnam, and the Philippines’ Palawan Island landing the Top 4 spots.

Completing the list are Sapa, Vietnam; Bogota, Colombia; Pattaya, Thailand; Alajuela, Costa Rica; Phnom Penh, Cambodia; and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

For this year, they also added two subcategories namely Honeymoon Destinations for romantic vacations and Sustainable Destinations for countries that “have strong commitments to sustainability.”

The list was based on the quality and quantity of the reviews of the travel guide community about the accommodations, restaurants, and things to do in certain destinations between Oct. 1, 2022, to Sept. 30, 2023. 

For the sustainable destinations, TripAdvisor collaborated with the Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDSM) to assess 100 destinations by reviews with the terms "environmentally friendly", "eco-tourism", "waste reduction", etc., and “searched through 300,000 English language Tripadvisor reviews, with a four-bubble rating or higher” between the mentioned period. They also looked into the seasonal travel index through their Consumer Sentiment Survey and the searches made to the site between the period for their travels on Dec.1, 2023, to Feb. 29, 2024.
