Bring home the... whut? Party guests backpack whole lechon

By NICK GARCIA Published Apr 22, 2023 8:30 am

There are two telltale signs that you're in a Filipino handaan: if there's lechon, and if guests take out food items via plastic bags. The latter even led to the memeification of a line from Sharon Cuneta's song Bituing Walang Ningning: "Balutin mo ako ng hiwaga ng iyong pagmamahal."

In Cebu, party guests just showed off take-out skills beyond megastar levels, as they put an entire spit-roasted pig in a backpack.

Facebook user Kharleen Narvasa of Danao City posted a photo of her companion ready to bring home the lechon still mostly intact.

A vocalist for a band, the 24-year-old Kharleen told PhilSTAR L!fe that they performed for the company party and birthday celebration of a resort owner in Lapu-Lapu City.

She said the owner was impressed with their band's performance and told them to take home whatever "handa" they want, especially since most guests already left.

One of Kharleen's bandmates, she recalled, jokingly told the owner, "Ahem, kahit lechon lang!"

But little did they know that the owner would indulge them—and far from just the expected slices of crispy skin and juicy meat.

"Buksan mo ang bag mo," Kharleen recalled the owner telling her bandmate as the owner himself put the lechon inside, much to their awe.

She then took to social media to celebrate the surprise bonus for their band's efforts that night.

Kharleen also didn't expect her post to go viral. To date, it has over 7,700 reactions (mostly "Haha"), 1,800 comments, and 19,000 shares.

"Solve na for one week. Pwede subak gulay/pancit/sabaw/paksiw/adobo," one user commented.

In Pilipino Star Ngayon Digital's repost, another user commended the host for his generosity.

"Pangmalakasang Sharon 'yan," they said.

Another commenter suggested that the birthday cake should get the exact treatment.
