As the live-action adaptation of the The Little Mermaid swims into theaters just a few months from now, Disney has released a new magical trailer that gives fans a first look at some of the film's iconic characters.
Aired during the 95th Academy Awards ceremony, the two-minute trailer starts off with an action-packed and heart-pounding situation as Ariel, played by Halle Bailey, witnesses a ship sinking in the middle of a stormy sea.
It is there that she rescues her love interest, the handsome and kind Prince Eric, who is played by Jonah Hauer-King.
Unhappy with what she has done, Ariel gets confronted and scolded by Triton (played by award-winning actor Javier Bardem), her overprotective father and the King of Atlantica, who harbors severe prejudice against humans.
Wanting to know more about the human world, the young mermaid seeks the help of the treacherous sea witch Ursula, who is brought to life by comedian Melissa McCarthy, wherein she makes a dangerous deal with her to trade her beautiful voice for human legs so she could explore the world above.
She is joined by her loyal friends from the deep: Flounder, an cowardly yet noble tropical fish, Sebastian, a crab and King Triton's trusted servant, and Scuttle, an eccentric and rather dimwitted diving bird. They are voiced by Jacob Tremblay, Daveed Diggs, and Awkwafina, respectively.
The live-action adaptation is expected to follow the same storyline as Disney's original 1989 animated film, which centers on a 16-year-old mermaid princess of Atlantica named Ariel who is fascinated with life above the sea. After being captivated by a human prince named Eric, she forms a contract with an evil sea witch named Ursula to transform her into a human in exchange of her voice.
The live-action version is scheduled for a May 26 release.
