It looks like the demon nun Valak is upping the scares in the upcoming horror film The Nun 2.
In an interview with SFX Magazine, the film's director, Michael Chaves, teased that the sequel to the 2018 supernatural horror flick might just be the most violent movie in The Conjuring Universe yet based from the reaction they got from test audiences.
"I think that this does get darker. Even audiences have said this, when we screened it. It is definitely more violent than what they expected from a Conjuring movie," Chaves told the magazine.
"It’s always a delicate balance. It’s definitely scary, it’s 100 percent delivered on that. Just as horror audiences have developed the appetite for horror, the appetite for violence has started to increase, and so there are some violent elements in this," he continued.
Warner Bros. had released the official trailer for The Nun 2 in July, where it teases that the film will give viewers more background about the demon nun, with a character narrating that the entity was "once an angel rejected by God."
Chaves also shared that there’s a line in the movie that talks about how "demons are infinite," adding, "I like the idea that she’s always been here in different forms. I think that there’s still more stories of Valak the demon nun to be told."
The Nun 2 stars Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, Storm Reid, Anna Popplewell, and Bonnie Aarons.
It is the ninth installment in The Conjuring Universe franchise that was created by acclaimed horror director James Wan. Valak first appeared as the true antagonist in The Conjuring 2. Due to its menacing appearance as a demonic nun, the character quickly became popular among fans of the franchise and received its own spinoff.
The synopsis of the upcoming film reads: "1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit THE NUN follows SISTER IRENE as she once again comes face to face with the demonic force VALAK – THE DEMON NUN."
The Nun 2 is set to premiere in Philippine theaters on Sept. 6.
