There's more story to tell for the critically acclaimed video game The Last of Us.

The game's creator Neil Druckmann revealed at the end of two-hour documentary Grounded 2: Making of The Last of Us Part 2 that a threequel is in the works.

"I've been thinking about it: Is there a concept there? And for years I haven't been able to find that concept. But recently that's changed," he said in the documentary about the second Last Of Us game.

While details about the third game are still sparse, Druckmann revealed that there's a "concept" that's been developed.

"I don't have a story, but I do have that concept that, to me, is as exciting as [Last of Us] 1, as exciting as [Last of Us] 2, is its own thing and yet has this through line for all three. So it does feel like there's probably one more chapter to this story.

The first Last of Us game came out in 2013 with the second released in 2020. A DLC, named Left Behind, was also dropped in 2014 to expand the 2013 title.

The first game mainly followed Joel, a smuggler who lost his daughter during an outbreak of a mutated fungus. He gets tasked to escort Ellie, a teenager who's immune to the infection, across a post-apocalyptic United States.

The second game later mainly followed Ellie as she seeks revenge over the death of a loved one.

The third one is speculated to be about Joel's brother Tommy who is also after justice but Druckmann didn't clearly said it would be about him. "I hope someday we get to make it," he said about this.

The Last of Us Part 1 and 2 have received rave reviews, with the two being named Game of the Year, respectively, by award-giving bodies like The Game Awards, D.I.C.E. Awards, and Golden Joystick Awards.

HBO has also adapted the games into a TV series starring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Since its release in January 2023, the series has won Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards and has been nominated for Golden Globes.

The series' second is set to premiere in 2025 and is expected to follow the story of The Last of Us Part 2.
