'Barbie' stars Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera disappointed over Oscars snubs vs. Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig

Barbie stars Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera lamented the “snub” against Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig in the Best Actress and Best Director categories at the nominations for the 96th Academy Awards.

Gosling—who portrayed Ken, the titular doll’s romantic interest—got a nod for Best Supporting Actor while Ferrera—who portrayed Gloria, an employee at Mattel, the company that created Barbie—got a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

In a statement obtained by Variety, Gosling said that while he’s “extremely honored” to be nominated, “there is no Ken without Barbie.”

“[A]nd there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.”

He noted that without the talent, grit and genius of Robbie and Gerwig, “no recognition would be possible for anyone on the film.”

“To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement,” Gosling said, adding how the two “made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history.”

“Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees,” he added. “Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”

Ferrera, meanwhile, told Variety that she’s “incredibly disappointed” that Robbie and Gerwig weren’t nominated.

“Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it,” she added. “Creating this world, and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon. It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.”

The nominees for the 96th Academy Awards were released late Tuesday, Jan. 23.

Barbie and its other half in the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, the epic biographical thriller Oppenheimer, are among the nominees in the Best Picture category.

Gerwig, meanwhile, got a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay, while Robbie was named a producer for the film in the Best Picture category.
