‘GomBurZa,’ ‘Mallari,’ and more MMFF films coming to Netflix
Looking for more Filipino movies to add to your watch list? Several entries from the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2023 will be available for streaming on Netflix.
The streaming giant announced on Thursday, March 21 the six additional MMFF 2023 entries that will be available on the platform.
If you want to feel the feels, first on the list is the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time, Rewind which will be released on the platform on March 25. The film follows the story of John (Dingdong Dantes) who was given an extraordinary chance to go back and save the life of his wife, Mary (Marian Rivera).
From Pokwang and Eugene Domingo’s comedy films Becky and Badette to horror films Kampon and Mallari, here are the other MMFF entries you must include in your next movie marathon.
Becky and Badette (streaming on April 4)
The film follows the story of two best friends, Becky (Eugene Domingo) and Badette (Pokwang) who are both struggling to make ends meet. During their high school reunion organized by long-time rival Nirvana Batungbakal (Agot Isidro), Becky falsely revealed that she is a lesbian and is in a romantic relationship with Badette—a “revelation” that went viral online and a chance to turn their lives around.
GomBurZa (streaming on April 9)
To start streaming on the National Day of Valor, refresh (or familiarize) yourself with the heroic story of three Filipino Catholic priests Fr. Mariano Gomez (Dante Rivero), Fr. Jose Burgos (Cedrick Juan), and Fr. Jacinto Zamora (Enchong Dee). The film narrates how the priests stood up against the Spanish colonial rule—their execution in 1872 is deemed one of the most pivotal moments in Philippine history.
Kampon (streaming on April 18)
The horror-supernatural film follows the story of Clark (Derek Ramsay) and Eileen (Beauty Gonzalez) who have been taunted by society for being childless for eight years in their marriage—until one day, a young girl came knocking on their door claiming to be Clark’s daughter. But the question is... is she really?
Family of Two (streaming on June 1)
Single mother Maricar (Sharon Cuneta) has dedicated her whole life to raising and taking care of her son Matty (Alden Richards). The two were tight-knit until Matty desired to move abroad for his dreams and to build his own family with the love of his life. To help his mom accept his decision, Matty makes it his goal to find his mom a suitable partner to make his pending migration easy for her, which eventually tests the bond between mother and son.
Penduko (streaming on June 7)
The remake of the beloved franchise follows the story of Pedro (Matteo Guidicelli) who met unlikely heroes when he came back to his province. He later discovered the unexpected supernatural powers he inherited from his ancestors. Together with his team, he worked to fight the evil running amok in their town.
Mallari (streaming on June 21)
The film traces back to the life of Fr. Severino Mallari, infamously known as the “first recorded serial killer in the Philippines.” His fictional descendant, Jonathan is on a mission to find a cure for his dying girlfriend, Agnes (Janella Salvador), which eventually leads him to their ancestral home, where he eventually discovers not what he’s looking for, but generations’ worth of curse.
