Apple announces new M3 chip for iMac and Macbook Pro, which has new space black color

Apple announced its newest M3 processor that delivers increased performance for its iMac and MacBook Pro computers, as well as a new “space black” color for the latter.

In a post after the Apple event on Oct. 31 (Philippine time), the American tech giant said that M3 chips—M3, M3 Pro, M3 Max—are the first personal computer chips built using the 3-nanometer process technology, which allows “more transistors to be packed into a smaller space and improving speed and efficiency.”

New features for its graphics processing unit include:

  • Dynamic caching, which improves performance for the most demanding apps and games.
  • Ray tracing, which models the properties of light as it interacts with a scene, allowing apps to create extremely realistic and physically accurate images.
  • Mesh shading, which delivers greater capability and efficiency to geometry processing, enabling more visually complex scenes in games and graphics-intensive apps.

M3, according to Apple, now has up to 2.5x the speed of the M1 chip it released in 2020. Its central processing unit also has architectural improvements that make performance and efficiency cores faster while allowing the system to maximize battery life.

The M3 family will also have a unified memory architecture that delivers high bandwidth and low latency. Its enhanced neural engine and its advanced media engine improve machine learning and video performance.

Ultimately, M3’s maximized performance leads to less charging time for MacBook Pro and, therefore, less energy consumed, which Apple said is better for the environment.

The Macbook Pro with M3 chip would be available in 14- and 16-inch models. It comes in 14- and 16-inch models and has up to 22 hours of battery life. It delivers improved performance in the most demanding of apps and games that can be graphics-intensive.

The 8-core iMac is available in green, pink, blue, and silver, while the 10-core iMac is also available in yellow, orange, and purple.

Users may now order iMac and MacBook Pro with the new M3 chip, with availability starting Nov. 7.

Prices in the United States market, according to Apple, range from $1,249 (P70,000) to $1,499 (P85,000) for the iMac and $1,599 (P90,000) to $2,499 (P142,000) for Macbook Pro.
