Good-looking characters? Check. Action adventure period drama? Check. Exciting plot twists? Check. Lee Dong Wook and Kim Bum are set to make hearts race once again as they return as gumiho brothers in Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 on Prime Video.

The action-packed series is the sequel to the fantasy K-drama Tale of the Nine-Tailed (2020) that tells the story of gumiho half-brothers Lee Yeon (Lee Dong Wook) and Lee Rang (Kim Bum). This season, fans can expect a more spiced-up series with the inclusion of amazing actors Kim So Yeon (The Penthouse) and Ryu Kyung Soo (Itaewon Class).

In Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938, Lee Yeon goes back in time where he reunites with his brother Lee Rang and meets new characters along the way.

PhilSTAR L!fe catched up with the cast of Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 to talk about what to expect from the much-awaited sequel and how it varies from season one.

Lee Dong Wook: Compared to season one, I’d say that because we’re situated in a different time period, that means everything’s about to change. Also, you can expect a greater scale of action. As for romance, because I’m going back in time as a married man to Ji-ah, my love stands very firm. And holding on to that love, I’ll be going back in time and respond to many different events, in order to protect what I love.

Kim Bum: Just like Dong Wook said, because the time period is very different. And we also have added to the cast former guardian mountain spirits. That means there will be a greater scale of action that you can look forward to. And due to the time period, what would have been cars in modern day, we’ll now be riding horses and using guns and other weapons that fit that particular period. Those are some of the changes that I hope the fans can look forward to.

With the absence of Jo Bo Ah who played Lee Dong Wook’s love interest Nam Ji-ah in season one, season two introduces Kim So Yeon as Ryu Hong-ju, a former mountain goddess who has a history with Lee Yeon. Another welcome addition to the cast is Ryu Kyung Soo as Cheon Mu-yeong, a long-time friend of Lee Yeon and Ryu Hong-ju.

Despite joining the show only in the second season, the new cast members seem to have had no difficulties in building chemistry with the main stars.

Kim So Yeon: I’ve also always wanted to do a fantasy drama series as well, and wanted to work with Dong-wook and Kim Bum. Also, because I had heard of and seen the amazing chemistry the two actors had brought in the previous season, I had no worries about building rapport or chemistry.

Ryu Kyung-soo: As for the rapport with Dong Wook and Bum, rather than me having to do any of the work, they were so generous and reached out first, and really tried their best to make us feel at home, and comfortable. They treated me to a lot of great food! Including makgeolli (rice wine). So I’m very grateful.

If the teasers for Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 are any indication, fans will definitely be treated to intense fight scenes and top-notch visuals. Lee Dong Wook gives a bit of a spoiler for the show as he describes his coolest fight scene this season.

Lee Dong Wook: I had way too many action scenes. It was almost like every morning, I’d wake up and someone would yell, “Fight!!” And I’d be right on the set fighting. But among those scenes, the most memorable would be the battle between Lee Yeon living in 1938 and Lee Yeon who has traveled back in time from modern day. So it’s literally Lee Yeon vs. Lee Yeon. We managed to shoot it quicker than expected but there was so much work to be done because I had to do double action from both sides. It was very challenging but very memorable and also a lot of fun.

Meanwhile, Kim Bum differentiates his fight scenes in Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 from the previous season where his character Lee Rang started off as a villain.

Kim Bum: Personally, in the previous season a lot of action scenes from Lee Rang the purpose of them was to destroy and demolish. However, in this season, there are action scenes where I fight and give it all in order to protect something.

Lee Dong Wook and Kim Bum, who both have a huge fan base in the Philippines, are surely looking forward to their latest project. Both actors have been to the Philippines before and Lee Dong Wook says he has great memories of his past visits. They both share their desire to meet their Filipino fans again in the future.

Lee Dong Wook: Because of COVID, we couldn't travel, and it’s been a long time since I met with my fans overseas. In fact, my last Asian tour was back in 2017, so about six years ago. I can’t believe it’s been that long. I really miss my fans in Asian countries, including the Filipino fans. I’ve actually been to the Philippines about five to six times and I remember the fans being so welcoming and loving toward me, and I only have great memories of the country. So I truly hope I’ll be able to visit again soon.

Kim Bum: I’m patiently waiting for the chance to be able to meet face-to-face with my fans in other countries, of course including the Philippines. I’m personally very grateful for all the love and support despite the long distance that stands between us, and I look forward to the day when we’ll be able to meet with the fans face-to-face.

We surely hope to see them both back!

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 is streaming exclusively on Prime Video starting May 6.
