'House of the Dragon' season 2 is premiering in June
The second season of House of the Dragon is coming in June.
The launch month for the Game of Thrones prequel was revealed by Warner Bros. Discovery streaming and gaming head J.B. Perrette in a conference interview, according to Variety. There's no exact date yet for the series' June release.
The show's second season will pick up after the death of (spoiler alert) King Viserys Targaryen as his firstborn Rhaenyra rallies her allies to make her claim on the throne after the king's son, Aegon, takes the crown. After the death of her son at the hands of Aegon's brother, Prince Aemond, Rhaenyra is left devastated, enraged, and ready to spill fire and blood.
Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin revealed in December 2023 that he was given a sneak preview of the first two episodes of House of the Dragon which he described as "dark."
"Of course, I am hardly objective when talking about anything based on my work... but I have to say, I thought both episodes were just great. (And they are not even finished yet.) Dark, mind you. Very dark," he wrote in a blog post.
"They make you cry. (I did not cry myself, but one of my friends did.) Powerful, emotional, gut-wrenching, heart-rending. Just the sort of thing I like. (What can I say? I was weaned on Shakespeare, and love the tragedies and history plays best of all.)"
House of the Dragon first premiered in August 2022, with the last episode of the first season hitting HBO in October 2023.
For its second season, production began in April 2023, with showrunner Ryan Condal saying: "We are thrilled to be shooting again with members of our original family as well as new talents on both sides of the camera. All your favorite characters will soon be conspiring at the council tables, marching with their armies, and riding with their dragons."
Returning for season 2 to reprise their roles are Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonya Mizuno, Rhys Ifans, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall and Matthew Needham. Some newcomers to the show include Abubakar Salim, Gayle Rankin, Freddie Fox, and Simon Russell Beale.
