What is vegan beauty and where can I find them?

By Camille Santiago Published Nov 03, 2020 8:03 am

Vegan beauty = boring? Never!

Thanks to the growing interest of health-conscious shoppers, vegan cosmetics are now becoming more popular with consumers according to the Global Vegan Cosmetics Market 2019-2023 report by UK-based market research firm TechNavio.

If looking for vegan beauty products years ago was like finding a needle in a haystack, now it’s everywhere—with better formulas at accessible price points.

Vegan vs. Cruelty-Free

These two terms can be confusing, but they’re easy to understand.

According to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), “vegan means that the product does not include any animal-derived ingredients,” nor does not contain any animal ingredients.

Cruelty-free on the other hand, means that the product was not tested on animals. If you see that Leaping Bunny logo on your product, then it’s cruelty-free!

Ingredients to watch out for

As mentioned, vegan beauty does not contain animal-derived products such as honey, beeswax, lanolin, collagen, albumen, carmine, cholesterol, gelatin, and many others.

Benefits of using vegan products

A lot of people are becoming more aware about the impact of animal-derived beauty products. Because they’re free of the ingredients mentioned above, vegan makeup is said to be gentler and safer than regular products, also because they’re free of harmful chemicals, metals, and other substances. More so, these are beneficial for those who suffer from various skin diseases, as many vegan products don't contain gluten.

“Vegan cosmetics improve skin health and reduce the chances of acne, dark circles, and other skin abnormalities. Hence, the preference for vegan products is rising among consumers which, in turn, is fueling the growth of the vegan cosmetics market,” the report added.

Vegan brands vs vegan products

Strictly speaking, vegan brands are 100% vegan—meaning all of their products are vegan. Whereas for vegan products, well, the brand may not exactly offer a full vegan product list, but have several options.

Vegan Brands

Aēsop

Aside from their apothecary-like aesthetic that many people like, Aēsop provides a top-of-the-line range of beauty products—from skincare to hair care, body care and fragrance. Their ethos revolves around combining "plant-based and laboratory-made ingredients, and use only those with a proven record of safety and efficacy," according to their website. They also claim that they do not test their products or ingredients on animals, nor do they commission any external parties to conduct animal testing on their behalf.

Aēsop is located at GF, Greenbelt, 5 Ayala Center, Makati

Last February, we opened the first @aesopskincare store in the country. Designed in collaboration with @mlkk.studio, Aesop Greenbelt pays homage to the site’s architectural history as the Ayala Museum, which was designed by Leandro Locsin in the 1960s. Locsin’s floating forms are referenced in the levitating volumes that emerge from the centre’s homogenous façade—a series of voids and alcoves open up around them. In the spirit of Brutalism’s honesty of expression, the approach for this store was to reveal the distinction between framework and insertion. — When Aesop reopens, we look forward to welcoming you anew. Until then, we are pleased to announce that we will be accepting orders for shipping and curbside pickups in the coming days. Please watch this space for more information.

Cover FX

High performing makeup with clean ingredients? Possible. Cover FX sells customisable beauty products that are made for any skin type or shade, and is animal-friendly, too. “We believe that beauty means taking care of yourself and the world around you, and that we have a responsibility to care for all living things,” the company wrote on their website.

Dear Dahlia

We fell in love with K-beauty brand Dear Dahlia because of their cute and feminine marble packaging, but we fell in love even more when we learned that they’re vegan. In an interview with Forbes, Dear Dahlia founder Grace Min said, “It all started from the belief that we shouldn’t have to choose between safety and performance. Without compromising one or the other, I wanted to make products that are as effective as they are clean.”

Dear Dahlia is available at Sephora.ph, Lazada, and BeautyMNL

Ellana Cosmetics

Guided by their brand principles, Filipino beauty brand Ellana Cosmetics believes that beauty can be kind for your skin and the planet. They never test on animals and never use animal-derived ingredients. "We source ingredients ethically, and work only with groups who uphold good manufacturing practices: no child labor, no environmentally unsound practices, and we work hard to be as sustainable as possible,” so reads the Ellana website.

Ellana Cosmetics is available at Lazada, Shopee, ZaloraBeautyMNL, BeautyBar.com.ph, and ShopPureBeauty.com
