Filipino-American rapper Saweetie paid tribute to her heritage at the 2021 Met Gala, where the dress code was "American Independence."

She chose to wear a rose-colored Christian Cowan gown with a two-panel train in different colors and strappy stilettos.

“This gown was inspired by Saweetie’s heritage, one train shows the Filipino flag, the other the Black American heritage flag,” wrote the designer on an Instagram post to explain the colors that feature red, yellow, blue, and white on one side; and black and white on the other.

“The gown features 10 million hand-placed crystals which are draped to adorn her body with diamond chain and Cowan emblem embellishments,” he continued.

Saweetie, whose real name is Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper, is a daughter of a Filipino-Chinese mother and an African-American father. She is proud of her heritage and culture, and shares stories to her fans any chance she gets.

"I remember my mom telling me that it’s important for me to share my heritage, to share my culture. So anytime that it makes sense, I do let people know that I am half-Filipina," she told Asian Journal.

The MTV Video Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards-nominated artist also shared something interesting about her upcoming album Pretty B*tch Music.

“I do talk some [shit] in Tagalog,” the 28-year-old rapper said in an interview with Billboard. “My mom was really against it. My Asian side, they’re very traditional — they were immigrants. So it’s like, their culture’s a little bit more reserved. So, she was just like, ‘Girl, I can’t believe you just said that!’”

Saweetie gained popularity after the release of her debut single Icy Girl.
