If you’re wondering why Lalela Mswane’s outfits in the 70th Miss Universe seem familiar, it’s because they have been worn by previous South African queens when they competed in the pageant.

South Africa delegate Lalela Mswane revealed that half of her Miss Universe wardrobe consists of outfits that were previously worn by her predecessors in a bid for sustainable fashion.

In her Dec. 3 Instagram post, Mswane said she decided to put her own spin on looks worn by past winners to cut down on fast fashion. “We are so hungry for new, exciting, and previously unseen items that we completely forget the implications of those choices and the effect it has on our planet. That is why I decided that half of my Miss Universe wardrobe will consist of outfits previously worn by my predecessors.”

The beauty queen said wearing upcycled looks is a contribution toward “a more sustainable future for fashion.”

“I’ve decided to put my own spin on it and make sure that you still see me but I’m so grateful that I get to have a little piece of them with me, and all while making a small contribution towards a more sustainable future for fashion,” Mswane added.

One of Mswane’s standout looks is a black printed jumpsuit previously worn by Miss Universe 2018 first runner-up Tamaryn Green.

Mswane also channeled her inner girl boss in a hot pink printed peplum tube top and a midi skirt that was owned by Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi. What a sensational look!

Mswane stood out during the sixth day of pre-pageant activities in a printed asymmetrical midi dress with a bold Aztec-inspired design, also worn by Tunzi. Gorgeous.

Mswane looks gorgeous in a black off-shoulder jumpsuit which was supposed to be worn by Miss Universe South Africa 2020 Natasha Joubert. According to the beauty queen, one look at this outfit and she knew it’s “the one” for her interview.

Aside from Mswane, Philippine representative Beatrice Gomez has also been spotted wearing hand-me-down outfits in the Miss Universe pageant as well.

Gomez looks stunning in a metallic animal print dress previously worn by Miss Earth 2017 Karen Ibasco. She added her own spin to the look by accessorizing with a black faux fur coat.

During the pre-pageant activities, Gomez turned heads in a white ruffle blouse with high-waisted plaid shorts that Ibasco wore during a trip to Japan in 2020. Her look was finished with gray thigh-high boots.

The 70th Miss Universe pageant is scheduled to air on Dec. 12 (Dec. 13, Philippine Standard Time).
