UP Diliman reopens Academic Oval to walkers, joggers

University of the Philippines Diliman’s Academic Oval has been the go-to spot of many joggers in the city. If you’re one of those people who enjoy a good run along its 2.2-kilometer stretch, here’s good news: the university has reopened the Oval to the public for exercise.

In a memo cascaded on campus last week, UP Diliman announced that beginning Nov. 7, the Oval will be open for “de-stessing activities or usual exercises” particularly “walking, jogging, running, yoga, stretching, and tai-chi.”

Anyone entering the premises must wear a face mask and face shield. Likewise, they must bring their own disinfecting alcohol and exercise equipment. Otherwise, they will not be allowed entry.

“Those who are doing activities like running or jogging must use their face shield when they are not using their face mask. If they have to talk to each other, they have to wear both their face masks and face shields,” UP Diliman wrote in its guidelines.

Tagging your friends along is totally fine, but just make sure that your group won’t exceed the 10-person limit being implemented on the campus. Additionally, social distancing of at least six feet must be practiced even when running

If you’re planning to go there soon, make sure to set your alarm early in the morning, as the university is imposing a schedule allowing entry for exercisers: 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the morning and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the evening.

Biking is not allowed during that period and “anyone roaming or loitering around the Academic Oval after 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. will be asked to immediately leave the premises,” the university added.

Aside from that, eating and social gatherings (like picnics) are strictly prohibited in the oval. Persons under 15 years old and over 65 are also not allowed to enter the area.
