We totally appreciate Rebel Wilson’s openness about the personal struggles she faced before declaring 2020 her “Year of Health.”

In a recent Instagram post, the actress got real about moments when she turned to emotional eating to deal with negative situations. Sharing a snap of herself with professional tennis player Novak Djokovic, she wrote in the caption: “I remember this was when I was at my unhealthiest—being overweight and indulging way too much with junk food. Using food to numb my emotions.”

The photo was taken around the time she was coping with grief and loss following her father’s death. “I didn’t think highly of myself and wasn’t valuing myself how I should have,” she explained. “It’s interesting that I’m still smiling and still trying to be active despite being in so much pain.”

Looking back, she took great pride in the person she has turned out to be. The Pitch Perfect star continued on to send encouragement to those who are dealing with body issues. “I feel you. I know what it’s like.”

When it comes to bringing out the best version of yourself, Wilson stressed that it’s never too late. “It’s not a race and it’s not a competition—it’s about respecting yourself and doing what’s best for you.”

It can be recalled that in her “year of health,” Wilson went through a major lifestyle change for her overall betterment. Apart from getting more physical activity and exercise, PEOPLE reported that she also followed the Mayr Method—an eating plan that “revamps their clients’ diets to eliminate snacking, reduce gluten and dairy intake and change how they chew their food."
