Justin Bieber reveals past drug problem, bodyguards had to check every night if he was still alive
Justin Bieber got real about his substance abuse in the past, saying that he even reached the point of having his security guards check his pulse every night to make sure he was still alive.
While he became famous for his hit songs and documentary projects, none of that filled the void inside of him. In fact, despite his incredible success, the 27-year-old singer had “a sense of still yearning for more.”
“It was like I had all this success and it was still like: ‘I’m still sad, and I’m still in pain. And I still have these unresolved issues,” he said in an exclusive interview with GQ Magazine, referring to drugs as “a numbing agent to just continue to get through.”
The world, which bombarded him with different judgments, eventually led to “jaded” Bieber. “And then you wake up one day and your relationships are f---ed up and you're unhappy and you have all this success in the world, but you're just like: 'Well, what is this worth if I'm still feeling empty inside?'" he mused.
In search of hope and faith, he had to turn to a higher being. "I came to a place where I just was like: 'God, if you're real, I need you to help me, because I can't do this on my own. Like, I'm struggling so hard,” Bieber recalled. “Every decision I make is out of my own selfish ego.”
The Hollywood star said he had a renewed sense of purpose with the help of God. He also found comfort and refuge in the love of his life, supermodel Hailey Bieber, who constantly gave him something to look forward to each day.
Bieber could only turn out grateful for the outpouring of love he’s able to share with others. After all, he knows his past cannot simply define him and the difference he can make now.
“A lot of people let their past weigh them down, and they never do what they want to do because they think that they’re not good enough,” he said. “But I’m just like: ‘I did a bunch of stupid shit. That’s okay. I’m still available. I’m still available to help. And I’m still worthy of helping.’”
