Man who proposes to long-time girlfriend asks her to pay half the cost of engagement ring

The dating scene has changed and evolved over the years, with men no longer expected to pay the bill on first dates. A man in Taiwan got the attention of the online community as he asked his girlfriend to split the bill—on her engagement bill at that.

As per the South China Morning Post, the woman posted online about how her long-time boyfriend finally popped the question with a diamond ring. They've been together for four years and said that throughout their relationship, she respected her beau's attitude toward money.

When they returned home from their marriage proposal in front of friends, the boyfriend revealed the cost of the ring (around P274,000) and asked his fiance to transfer him half the amount.

The man said that marriage is for two people, and therefore, everything between them had to be shared equally.

This didn't bode well for their relationship, as SCMP said they've been going through a rough patch—the boyfriend no longer brought up his "cost-sharing" plan while the girlfriend has not worn the engagement ring since.

Netizens on the online forum Dcard sided with the woman, telling her to leave her man.

"Men who can't afford to spend money on you really don't want you in the first place," one said.

"He picked the diamond ring, he picked the price, you had absolutely no choice in the matter," another added.

"Will you have to pay for the birth of a child in the future? The cost of maternity check-ups, hospitalization, and monthly fees? And what about the discomfort of pregnancy, body transformations, labor pains, and post-natal breastfeeding? Will he convert it into cash for you?" wrote one user.
