Ariana Grande reveals she used to 'hide' herself with lip fillers and makeup

After years of believing that beauty is synonymous with heavy makeup, bigger hairdo, and enhancements like lip fillers, Ariana Grande now better sees it as a way of self-expression.

In an episode of Vogue’s “Beauty Secrets” YouTube series on Tuesday, Sept. 12, the singer, actress, and entrepreneur emotionally recalled the days she used to get a “ton of lip fillers and botox” because she felt the need to “hide.”

In the video, the 30-year-old pop star shared her step-by-step skincare routine, while also sharing how to do 60s cat eye makeup, and then went on to open up about getting lip enhancements.

“Full transparency... As a beauty person, as I do my lips, I've had a ton of lip filler over the years and Botox," she began. "For a long time, beauty was about hiding for me," she continued.

"I, over the years, used makeup as a disguise or as something to hide behind," the Honeymoon Avenue singer revealed, adding that she used to opt for bigger hair and thicker eyeliner for the same reason.

She went on to share how people’s opinions shaped her perspective on beauty at such a young age.

"Being exposed to so many voices at a young age and especially when people have things to say about your appearance and stuff, it's really hard to know what's worth hearing or not,” she explained. “But when you're 17, you don't really know you don't know that yet.”

Ariana then shared she stopped getting lip fillers in 2018 because she felt it was “too much,” and as she grew up, especially now that she owns her own makeup line, R.E.M. Beauty, Ariana shared she realized how everyone has a personal relationship with makeup.

"I don't love [hiding] being the intention behind it anymore," she said.

"I think of it as self-expression now and accentuating what is here. Our relationships to beauty are so personal, like we're here talking about beauty secrets,” she said.

“Isn't the secret that we all just want to feel our best and be loved?" the One Last Time singer added.

And although she changed her mind about getting beauty enhancements, she stressed that she doesn’t judge those who use them too.

"To each their own, whatever makes you feel beautiful, I do support,” she said.

“But I know for me I was just like, oh, I want to see my well-earned cry lines and smile lines, I hope my smile lines get deeper and deeper. And I laugh more and more, and I just think aging can be such a beautiful thing,” she continued.

"Now, might I get a facelift in 10 years? Might, yeah. But these are just thoughts that I feel like we should be able to discuss," she said.

"If we're sitting here talking about beauty secrets, let's lay it all out there."
