Slater Young and Kryz Uy on pressures of being internet's 'life peg' and how podcasting make them more relatable

By AYIE LICSI Published Jan 06, 2023 7:29 pm

Slater Young and Kryz Uy have no doubt become the ultimate #goals, with fans seeing their SkyFam on Instagram and YouTube. But despite being the internet's "life peg," the couple loves keeping it real and showing everyone that they experience struggles, too, like everyone else.

Slater and Kryz do this through skypodcast and skydive, their podcasts where they talk candidly about adventures and misadventures in raising a family and being in a relationship, as well as give advice to their listeners.

"We try our best to bring it back down to earth in our podcast by sharing our own experiences and struggles—to normalize 'normal' and not just the highlights of our relationship," the couple told PhilSTAR L!fe.

"We do feel a sense of responsibility to always be real to our audience. Since they look up to us, we need to highlight the right things and use social media to uplift."

The SkyFam mom and dad added that they have felt pressure to be a "life peg" persona online, and it's taught them to be careful with what they say.

"There comes to a point when you realize that so many people look up to you, and self-doubt will definitely creep up," Slater said.

"It's important that behind everything we do, there's always a purpose," Kryz continued.

Having their own podcast didn't just allow them to be more open to their fans, but to each other, too.

"Spotify has enabled us to talk in-depth about more intimate topics, and the response has been great. Not only that, it's been a real help for our relationship to be able to spend time together and discuss things we normally wouldn't get to," they said.

On skypodcast, they've tackled topics like the difference between how males and females relate to things, stress, and dealing with failure and rejection.

Connecting with the #SkyFam

Now, with Spotify allowing users to watch videos of podcasts instead of just listening to the audio, the celebrity couple is able to connect more with their listeners. One way is through Letters to Sky, a segment where they take on questions from listeners.

"We love making new connections and strengthening them through meaningful conversation," the couple said.

"We try to mirror our day-to-day conversations to the way we talk in our podcasts. The primary aim is to always be authentic with our viewpoints, but at the same time respectful of differing opinions, with the hope that our listeners would also follow suit."

Spotify expanded its video podcasting feature to Filipino creators in November 2022, allowing users to connect with their fans more deeply.

"Video podcasts allow listeners to feel more connected to the creators behind their favorite shows. Through visual interaction, fans can get to know their favorite podcast hosts even better, and creators can connect with their audiences in a much deeper way," Spotify Head of Studios for Southeast Asia Carl Zuzarte told L!fe.

skypodcast and skydive are Spotify Exclusives that you can listen to on the music streaming platform. These shows now come with videos so you can watch Slater and Kryz discuss like you were in the room with them.
