I went to a tarot reader for the first time—here's what happened

Spiritual healing was never really my thing. I tried to understand astrology and crystals, but if I’m being honest, I find the process intimidating and frightening (and I blame the television for that—you know, creepy old woman doing supernatural things).

But since it’s becoming a trend lately, I began to wonder if it really works. Lucky for me, I was given the opportunity to try it last week. Call it peer pressure or what, but I got curious and decided to give it a go.

My reader’s name is Neetu Nilishi and she is an internationally acclaimed Intuitive counselor, a meditation instructor, and founder of Miraki Miracle House. She is based in the Philippines and has been practicing for about 10 years now. She is also doing NGO work and spiritual healing at Centro Holistico.

Neetu says that tarot card reading is “meant to help and offer guidance pertaining to a person’s past, present, or future” so that they can understand their situation better.

She further explains, “It’s more for spiritual growth as opposed to fortune telling, which is just about predicting your future.” Neetu adds, “The tarot is a mirror that reflects back to you the hidden aspects of your own unique awareness. In fact it’s a great tool for us psychics to strengthen our intuition and connect with our higher self.”

But Neetu reminds us that “right and wrong are relative.” She explains, “It purely depends on the way you perceive it. Life is full of uncertainties and we all have our ways of dealing with it.”

Tarot card reading is not predicting your future, rather “the answer lies with the subconscious—that deep level of memory and awareness that resides within each of us, but outside our everyday experience.”

“Even though we ignore the action of the unconscious most of the time, it profoundly affects everything we do,” Neetu shares.

This is it

Since it's my first time, I really don't know what to expect or do except to  let her take the lead and read me like a true psychic. You know, to see if she’s just faking it or not. But before I can do that, Neetu says that her sessions are interactive, meaning, you can tell her whether what she’s saying is resonating with you or not.

“You don’t go to a doctor without telling them what you’re feeling, right?” True.

The reading is done virtually. Since I couldn’t be there physically, she asks me to take deep breaths, relax, and clear my mind so she can draw the cards based on my vibrations.

What Neetu does first is a general reading, which according to her, “you need not tell us anything and we can tell you what we see and feel in your past, present and future.”

“I see you as an eagle,” she starts. “He has a macro vision, he can see things which no one else can because he has that vision,” she tells more about what kind of person I am through what she sees.

“I think one of your biggest strengths is… you are a person who likes to give. I see you as a provider, not as a taker,” she continues. When she says this, I know this is going to be interesting because I find that statement true. I’m the type of person who would give willingly without expecting anything in return.

As we go on, she also reads a little about what may happen to me in the near future (I’m not going to dwell on that too much because I don’t want to jinx it!) and how I can manifest that future. Yes, she gives me tips and does feng shui to my room a little bit.

Finding a semblance of peace

The next part of the reading is more specific. I tell her my situation and she helps me formulate the questions to ask “to give you the exact answer that you are looking for.” In this type of reading, you can ask anything about money, career, love, business, health, relationships, family, etc.

At this time, I was going through something and needed guidance. I wanted to understand my situation better and gain some peace of mind.

Because my questions are specific to a couple of individuals, Neetu asks for their full names and birthdays, and tells me to think about them. From there, she is able to read what kind of person they are, what they think and feel about me, how the next year may go, and the guidance I needed.

One part that resonates well with me is when she tells me there are baggages that I’m still holding on to—that my cup is almost filled. Neetu tells me that for me to “find a semblance of peace” in my psyche and attract more good, I need to let go.

At the end of our consultation, she gives me more exercises to help me find peace.

Refreshing experience

Personally, talking to Neetu is like talking to a friend. Unlike the stereotypical psychic women we see in movies, Neetu gives advice like a friend and encourages me to interact with her.

Tarot card reading was a whole experience for me. I reflected on what I’d learned and it empowered me to be the “Eagle” that Neetu described. It also helped me understand why certain relationships in my life were as they were, why I am in certain challenges, and most importantly, understand who I am better.

I mean, I still have a long way to go—it’s only been one session—but it helped me in some way.

If you're a first timer and are curious about tarot card reading, here are some tips from Neetu:

  1. Go with an open mind without preconceived expectations. This will make you absorb their guidance fully with no judgement or shock value. We are here to assist you and your secrets are safe with us.
  2. Ask a lot of questions and seek clarifications. This is so you'll gain a deeper understanding of your situation, making it an interactive session.
  3. Know that you still have control of your life. You can either choose to walk out empowered and inspired or disappointed and frustrated. Tarot is a tool to show you a future which you can co-create, so pocket all the positive accounts that are about to happen in your life and believe you can change the negative by changing your reaction to that experience.
  4. Make sure you are not in an agitated or angry state of mind. Given that the reader will be providing answers based on your current vibrations, coming in that state of mind will deprive you of feeling the essence of your reading and make you see it from an apprehensive mindset.
