Former Senator Bongbong Marcos has announced that he will run for president in the May 2022 elections.

Marcos, who lost in the 2016 vice presidential elections, announced his presidential bid in a Facebook live video today, Oct. 5.

His presidential bid comes 35 years after his father, late dictator Ferdinand Marcos was ousted as the head of state in 1986. Under his controversial regime, the latter put the country under martial law for over 10 years, which led to a notable record of human rights violations.

Early today, Marcos also took his oath as member and chairman of Partido Federal ng Filipinas, a newly formed political party that earlier named him as the standard bearer.

On Sept. 24, the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan has also named Marcos as their presidential bet.
