An elderly man sued his daughter for not wanting to take care of him when he suffered some injuries from a car accident.

According to a report by media outlet CNN-News18, the Chinese man named Zhang accused his daughter of refusing to take a pause from her studies at a university to look after him and his health after the incident. He sent her numerous texts and sought her help via repeated calls, but got no response at all.

The parent eventually discovered that her daughter blocked his number on her mobile phone, prompting him to file a case against her at a local court. He also ordered his child to give him financial support of 1,500 yuan (over P12,000) every month.

His daughter said she was not allowed to take a temporary leave from school. She also pointed out that she has two other brothers who could do it for him instead of merely putting such pressure on her.

News18 noted that Article 26 of the Chinese Civil Code says “adult children have the obligation to support and protect their parents.”

The court, however, took into consideration that a monthly allowance for her father would not be possible because she’s still a student. She was, instead, “advised to be more sensitive toward her father and find a suitable way to take care of Zhang, while continuing her studies at the same time.”
