Flossie, the world's oldest living cat, is turning 27
They say a cat has nine lives, but Flossie is still living the first one to the fullest as the world's oldest living cat.
The black and brown cat from the United Kingdom received an official recognition from Guinness World Records, at the age of 26 years and 329 days old. It's roughly the feline equivalent of 120 human years.
Flossie is in good health, though poorly sighted and deaf, Guinness said on its website.
“I knew from the start that Flossie was a special cat, but I didn’t imagine I’d share my home with a world record holder," her current owner Vicki Green said.
Green adopted Flossie when she was handed to Cats Protection, their local cat welfare charity.
Green said Flossie is unbothered by her deafness and quickly adapts to new environments despite her lack of sight.
“She’s so affectionate and playful, especially sweet when you remember how old she is," Green added. "I’m immensely proud that Cats Protection matched me with such an amazing cat."
Cats Protection's Naomi Rosling said they're flabbergasted when Flossie's vet records showed her to be 27.
Flossie has been into several homes, beginning in 1995 when a worker from Merseyside hospital in Liverpool city adopted her.
At the time, she roamed free as a young stray and lived in a colony of cats close to the hospital.
When her owner passed away 10 years later, Flossie was taken in by the owner's sister. Sadly, the sister passed away 14 years later.
Flossie's second owner's son took care of her for three years, before being entrusted to Cats Protection.
It was then that Flossie met Green.
"She was loud for the first few nights," Green said, "because she can’t see in the dark and was a bit confused in her new surroundings."
"But she sleeps through the night now, snuggled on the bed with me."
