Father of Ateneo shooting suspect shot dead; PNP says 'speculative to assume' events have direct relation

The father of the Ateneo shooting suspect Chao Tiao Yumol was shot dead in Lamitan City in Basilan on July 29, local police said.

Lamitan City Police said two men riding a motorcycle gunned down Rolando Yumol outside his house at around 6:55AM.

Rolando sustained four gunshot wounds on his back, and was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

The incident happened five days after the July 24 shooting incident during the Ateneo Law School graduation ceremony in Quezon City.

That day, Chao opened fire before the ceremony proper, killing former Lamitan, Basilan Mayor Rose Furigay; her executive assistant Victor Capistrano; and Ateneo security guard Jeneven Bandiala.

Chao is facing three counts of murder, one count of frustrated murder, car theft, malicious mischief, and violation of Republic Act No. 10591 or the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition.

The Philippine National Police said an investigation is already ongoing, reminding the public that it's "speculative to assume" that what happened to the Yumol patriarch has a direct relation to his son's actions.
