Two days after the first 2020 US Presidential Election debate in Cleveland, Ohio, President Donald Trump announced in a Tweet that he and first lady Melania both tested positive for COVID-19, which has infected more than 7 million Americans to date.
In an 18-second video message he posted on Twitter Saturday local time, a day after his announcement, Trump sent out his thanks for “everyone’s support” and revealed that he will be taken to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where he has reportedly started Remdesivir therapy, an intravenous anti-viral drug.
“I am doing very well but we are going to make sure that things work out. The first lady is doing very well,” he said in his video message.
A few hours after his video message, he tweeted: “Going well, I think! Thank you to all. LOVE!!!”
The US President joins the list of world leaders who have been infected by the virus, which includes UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
Trump is known to downplay the extent of COVID-19. During the presidential debate, he even mocked his opponent, former US vice president Joe Biden, for wearing a mask often.
Thousands, including celebrities and noted personalities, spoke out on social media about the news — some sympathetic, and others either injected the political reality of the situation or peppered their response with humor.
Michelle and I hope that the President, First Lady, and all those affected by the coronavirus around the country are getting the care they need and are on the path to a speedy recovery.— Barack Obama (@BarackObama) October 2, 2020
God bless the president and the first lady. If you pray, please pray for their speedy and complete recovery — and for everyone infected, everywhere.— Rachel Maddow MSNBC (@maddow) October 2, 2020
This virus is horrific and merciless — no one would wish its wrath on anyone.
We must get its spread under control. Enough.
Good luck with your treatment, Mr President. I wish you a speedy recovery. https://t.co/l9oitcnLUg— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) October 3, 2020
As someone who has had #COVID19 and still suffers from post-covid syndrome, I can honestly say with all that I am that I wouldn’t wish this virus on my worst enemy.
Please wear a mask.

I don’t get how Melania got it - she’s been social distancing from trump since they got married— Whitney Cummings (@WhitneyCummings) October 2, 2020
If anything positive can come him testing positive, it would be his followers reevaluating their opinions. If they will now accept a lockdown, social distancing & mandatory mask-wearing, we could crush the virus like we should have from the start. #ButIAlsoBelieveInTheToothFairy https://t.co/uh0Y5FF4A7— Mark Hamill (@HamillHimself) October 2, 2020
