Vice President Kamala Harris becomes the first sitting VP to join Pride March in the US

When Kamala Harris made history as the first Black woman and South Asian-American to become Vice President of the United States, she was only getting started.

On Sunday, June 13, she became the country’s first sitting VP to join both members and allies of the LGBTQIA+ community in the fight for their rights. Wearing a “LOVE IS LOVE” tee under a casual pink blazer, she briefly took part at the Capital Pride in Washington, D.C. alongside Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.

According to NBC Washington, Harris stressed the current administration’s support for the advancement of queer rights in the US as she called for the passage of the Equality Act, which aims “to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation, and for other purposes.”

“We need to make sure that our transgender community and our youth are all protected. We need, still, protections around employment and housing,” she said. “There is so much more work to do and I know we are committed.”

Harris was elected Vice President, while Joe Biden was elected President of the US late last year. As noted by PEOPLE, their admin “has made LGBTQ issues one of their priorities, restoring transgender healthcare protections and removing Donald Trump’s ban on transgender military members.”

Earlier today, June 14, the VP tweeted a video of herself sending love to LGBTQIA+ Americans. “President Joe Biden and I will not rest until everyone has equal protection under the law,” she captioned the clip.
