Indiana man falls to death from Puerto Rico cliff while filming TikTok content
A man from Indiana fell to his death from a 70-foot cliff in Puerto Rico while he was filming content for TikTok.
PEOPLE reported that the body of Edgar Garay, 27, was found near a lighthouse in the municipality of Cabo Rojo on Monday, Jan. 30, after witnesses saw him "stumble toward the edge" of the cliff.
The local Coast Guard said Garay was on a "recreational day trip" when he was last seen alive Sunday evening, Jan. 29.
Officials from capital San Juan received a 911 emergency call at 6:50 p.m.
"We express our most heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Edgar Garay and pray they find closure and strength during this most difficult time," Coast Guard Sector San Juan commander Capt. José E. Díaz said in a statement.
Garay's brother Carlos told local television station WTHR about his late brother's love of creating videos.
"Unfortunately, that was what he was trying to do when he was closer to the edge than he should have been," Carlos said, adding Garay sustained head injuries from the fall.
Garay's family set up a GoFundMe online fundraiser to bring his body back home.
This isn't the first time a person has fallen to his death while filming content.
In December, a New Zealand tourist have fallen from a train over the Burma railway, also known as the "death railway," in Thailand.
A Chinese TikTok star also plunged to death from a 160-foot crane while recording a livestream video inside a crane cabin.
