Filipino rower Cris Nievarez has successfully qualified for the Tokyo Olympics slated in July.

The Philippine Rowing Association broke the news over their Facebook page after receiving confirmation that Nievarez qualified for the Men’s Single Sculls for the Olympic Games.

The last time the Philippines qualified for the Olympics was in 2000, when Benjamin Tolentino competed in the Sydney Summer Olympics.

Nievarez is now the eighth Filipino to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Those who have already qualified are Hidilyn Diaz for weightlifting, Carlos Yulo for artistic gymnastics, Ernest Obiena for pole vault, and four in boxing, namely Eumir Marcial for men’s middleweight, Carlo Paalam for men’s flyweight, Irish Magno for women’s flyweight, Nesthy Petecio for women’s featherweight.
