COMELEC: Voter registration suspended until March 31 in NCR Plus

Voter registration in NCR Plus is suspended until March 31 while the area is under enhanced community quarantine, the Commission on Elections said.

COMELEC spokesperson James Jimenez made the announcement on Twitter, where he stressed that the spike in coronavirus cases in the Philippines “is no small matter.”

As of yesterday, March 28, the country has recorded a total of 721,892 infections, as per the Department of Health. On that day alone, 9,475 new cases were recorded.

It can be recalled that voter registration hours were shortened last week due to the significant COVID-19 surge.

Filipinos who are eligible to vote may sign up for the May 2022 national and local polls until Sept. 30, 2021. After completing an online application form and securing an appointment via the official website of your local COMELEC office, you may follow our quick guide below. Just make it a point to adhere to COVID-19 health and safety protocols in order to curb the spread of the virus.

The Philippine News Agency reported the COMELEC’s plan to allow only five voters at a time at precincts and obtain more vote-counting machines, among other ways “to allow people to exercise their right to suffrage without sacrificing their safety amid the pandemic,” said COMELEC chairman Sheriff Abas.

Mail voting and online voting are also being considered, as per Jimenez, but they would still require the green light from Congress.
