An outpouring of sympathy and tributes came after news broke out regarding the death of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III today, June 24, as confirmed by various sources.

Friends, allies, celebrities, world leaders and people across the political spectrum have expressed their condolences, most of them on social media.

Former presidents have also sent their sympathies on the passing of PNoy, the 15th President of the Philippines from 2010 to 2016.

Former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada released a statement on his Facebook page, together with a photo of him and PNoy.

“Ako at ang sambayanan ay nalulungkot sa pagpanaw ni former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III. My sincere condolences to the Aquino family sa pagkakataong ito, ang aking tanging dasal ay bigyan kayo ng Diyos ng lakas ng loob. Paalam, PNoy!” wrote Estrada, who was the Philippines’ 13th President, from 1998 to 2001.

Meanwhile, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the country’s 14th President, whose term lasted from 2001 to 2010, also extended her condolences to the Aquino family.

“My family and I join the Filipino people in prayers and sympathy on the passing of former President Benigno Aquino III,” Arroyo said.

“Aside from his own achievements, he will be remembered as part of the Aquino family that has contributed three important people to the history of our nation, Senator Ninoy Aquino, and our 11th and 15th Presidents, Cory and Noynoy Aquino.”

President Rodrigo Duterte has not released an official statement but palace spokesman Harry Roque offered condolences during the palace briefing today, June 24, where he called for a moment of silence for the demise of the former chief executive.

"We commiserate and condole with the family and loved ones of former president Benigno Simeon 'Noynoy' Aquino III as we extend our condolences on his untimely demise," Roque said.

"We are grateful to the former president for his contributions and services to the country and we ask our people to offer a prayer for the eternal repose of the former chief executive."
