A commuter died after getting stuck in the train’s closing doors at the 59th Street-Columbus Circle station in New York City as the subway car departed.

According to New York Post, authorities said that the man “was struck by the same train that was pulling him” on Monday, Oct. 24 at around 5 p.m. (Oct. 25, 5 a.m., Philippine time), after he "rushed to get on a southbound 1 train and either a bag or piece of clothing got caught on the doors.”

The 20-year-old was declared dead at the Manhattan station.

No foul play has been seen in the ongoing investigation into his death, which has been described by the Metropolitan Transport Authority as a “terrible accident.”

“While the investigation is in its earliest stages, it appears this was a terrible accident that did not involve criminal activity,” the organization said.

“A person on the tracks was hit by a train and our thoughts are with his family, the train operator and riders who witnessed this tragedy,” it added.

The MTA also promised that they “will get to the cause and learn any lessons that may emerge as there is no higher priority than safety.”
