'Mamma Mia!' creator teases third movie and Meryl Streep returning 'if the script is right'

Mamma mia! Here we go again... again? The creator of the hit musical romcom based on the songs of Swedish supergroup ABBA is teasing the possibility of a third film.

In an interview with Deadline early this month, Judy Cramer said a third Mamma Mia! movie is "in its earliest stages," and she has "come up with a way" to bring back fan favorites like Meryl Streep from the first movie and Cher from the sequel subtitled Here We Go Again.

Cramer, however, pointed out that nothing is official just yet.

“I don’t want to over-egg it, but I know there’s a trilogy there,” she told Deadline.

“There is a story there, and I do think Meryl should come back," she added, "and if the script is right, she would, I think, because she really loved playing Donna."

Craymer first talked of a potential third Mamma Mia! movie in 2020, with cast member Amanda Seyfried expressing interest according to Collider.

"Every single person in that movie would say yes in a heartbeat because we want to hang out with each other," Seyfried told Collider.

She, however, expressed concerns in terms of the songs to use.

"I’ve said it before and I'll say it again and I hope I'm wrong again. I don't think there are enough ABBA songs to make a third movie," she said.

In a guest appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2021, Seyfried expressed interest in a third Mamma Mia! movie anew, jokingly saying she wants eight movies.

The original 2008 movie, based on the 1999 musical, tells the story of bride-to-be Sophie Sheridan (Seyfried), who invites three men to her wedding to Sky Ramand (Dominic Cooper) without informing her mother Donna Sheridan (Streep). The men—American architect Sam Carmichael (Pierce Brosnan), Swedish travel writer Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgård), and British banker Harry Bright (Colin Firth)—are Donna's former lovers, and Sophie wants to know who among them is her long lost father.

The 2018 sequel takes place five years after the events of Mamma Mia!, while also featuring flashbacks to Donna's youth.
