Decluttering queen Marie Kondo says house is 'messy,' 'kind of given up' on tidying up

Decluttering seems to no longer spark joy for Marie Kondo, as she bared that their house is "messy."

Kondo—who became an international phenomenon for her "KonMari" method of tidying up homes by keeping only things "that spark joy"—dropped the bombshell in a webinar promoting her new book, Marie Kondo’s Kurashi at Home: How to Organize Your Space and Achieve Your Ideal Life.

But the 38-year-old mother clarified that despite having a "messy" home, it made her realize that what's important is that she's enjoying spending with her family.

“The way I am spending my time is the right way for me at this time at this stage of my life," she said.

"I was a professional tidier, so I did my best to keep my home tidy at all times," Kondo added, sharing that she has "kind of given up on that in a good way" for her.

"Now I realize what is important to me is enjoying spending time with my children at home," she continued.

Kondo is the host of the series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo and Sparking Joy, which teach about decluttering not only physical spaces but also mental and emotional ones.

She shares three children with her husband Takumi Kawahara, with whom she tied the knot in 2012.
