Among the 25 reported cases of the more contagious COVID-19 UK variant in the Philippines, 22 have already recovered, and one patient died, according to the Department of Health on Monday.

In a virtual press briefing, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the country currently has two remaining active cases.

According to Vergeire, the 84-year-old patient from La Trinidad, Benguet died sometime in the third or fourth week of January (earlier reports said that the patient died on Jan. 24). The man was reportedly one of the eight additional UK variant cases logged in the Philippines last week.

Hindi pa nakuha ‘yung ibang detalye but apparently, noong kausap namin ‘yung regional office namin, they said that this person never went out, seldom, pero nandoon lang daw sa loob ng bahay, walang ibang contact. Tinitingnan po natin kung ano ang source of infection at ano po ang ibang circumstances,” Vergiere said.

It was in January when the more contagious COVID-19 UK variant was first detected in the Philippines from a man who traveled for business in Dubai in December.

As of Monday, the Philippines has a total of 538,995 COVID-19 cases, 499,772 recovered and 11,231 deaths.
