LOOK: A Pinoy sorbetes cart roams around Times Square in NYC
After a tricycle made its way to the Golden Gate Bridge, you'll never believe what just visited the Times Square in New York City: a Pinoy sorbetes cart.
Gearing up for summer in the United States, Filipino street food pop-up vendor So Sarap NYC teased its Filipino-American followers with a photo of one of the most iconic Pinoy summertime favorites, the Dirty Ice Cream.
"IT’S GOING TO BE A DIRTY DIRTY SUMMER !!!" they wrote on Instagram, captioning a photo of a man pushing an ice cream cart with the popular landmark in Manhattan. The post also shares a little bit of background on the street food favorite saying: "One is alerted of an approaching two-wheeled Sorbetes cart when a handbell is sounded by the 'Sorbetero' or the Dirty ice cream vendor. The kids and adults will then come running to buy and enjoy it either in a cone, cup, or 'monay' (bread) sandwich."
So Sarap NYC was born during the pandemic last year and is on a mission to "remind you of your childhood memories and give you a taste of what filipino street food is about." Since their launch in August 2020, they have roamed around New York selling Filipino street food favorites such as chicharon, balut, penoy, taho, isaw, barbeque, fishballs, mangga't bagoong, ice candy, and now dirty ice cream—they even went to the Brooklyn Bridge to sell binatog!
One of its owners' goal, VJ Navarro, is to make the Filipino culture known in America. "Most Asian cuisines such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Thai are known and accepted worldwide. He wants to put Filipino culture in the spotlight. I would encourage him every time, and still do,” Chinese co-owner, Sebastien Shan previously told PhilSTAR L!fe in an interview.
While there's not much information yet as to when and where the pop-up will be, So Sarap NYC did hint that it will be announced soon. They also said that a dairy-free option will be sold as well.
