World’s deepest pool opens in Dubai—it’s almost 200 feet deep!
At 196 feet (60 meters), Deep Dive Dubai beats Poland’s 147-feet (45-meter) swimming pool and scuba diving center Deepspot, which held the record as the world’s deepest swimming pool when it opened last year.
Dubai is known for its mega structures, including the world’s tallest skyscraper Burj Khalifa, and one of the world’s biggest malls, the Dubai Mall. And now, the city has added to its string of superlatives the “deepest swimming pool for diving” in the world, as verified by the Guinness World Records recently.
Deep Dive Dubai, which was constructed for the Crown Prince Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, who is an avid diver himself, uses 14 million liters of fresh water that’s equivalent to six Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Just by looking at the photos of the pool may trigger one’s thalassophobia (fear of deep bodies of water). The pool may not have the natural wonders of the surreal world beneath the ocean, but it has a post-apocalyptic themed “sunken city,” which divers (professional or beginner) and thrill-seekers may explore.
According to Deep Dive Dubai, it will take several dives to explore the vast underwater city that features different sections with cars, phone booths, foosball tables, and more.
To ensure the safety of the divers, they are monitored on large screens displaying the feed from 56 cameras that cover the entire pool.
Meanwhile, the water is filtered every six hours, and a 12-person hyperbaric facility is on stand by in case of an emergency.
Divers know too well that bad weather may cause cancellation of dives. But Deep Dive Dubai green lights every dive 365 days a year with its controlled diving environment.
Freedivers and scuba divers with certification will be guided first by a professional diver from Deep Dive to show them around. After that, they can explore on their own, within the limits of their training and experience, of course.
Meanwhile, first-time divers are also welcome as the facility has a team of instructors to guide them. Beginners could only plunge for a maximum of 39 feet (12 meters).
Deep Dive also offers globally recognized courses like scuba and freedive training.
For those who are not keen on diving, the facility has large windows and screens so visitors can watch divers explore the pool.
The pool is currently open via a by-invitation-only basis but it is reportedly set to open towards the end of the year.
Among the celebrities who recently visited Deep Dive was Will Smith, who gave a preview on Instagram of his dive at the world’s deepest pool.
