Great Dane gives birth to more than 20 puppies

A Great Dane has given birth to not one, not two, but 21 puppies!

Namine—a 2-year-old dog in Pocahontas, Virginia—delivered 21 puppies in over 27 hours. Sadly, two of her pups died shortly after they were born.

“Out of all of her puppies all of them were over a pound except two. The one was .94 ounces and the other one was .98 ounces. The next day I weighed them and everybody had gained anywhere from two to five ounces,” said Namine's owner, Tanya Dubbs.

Dubbs said she didn't expect that her dog would give birth to more than 14 puppies.

“So we got up to 16 and then she had another one. I was sitting on the bed and she was on the bed with me and I was talking to a friend of mine and I heard a gush of fluid and I looked over and I said we have another puppy,” said Dubbs.

Dubbs shared that Namine got into an accident last year. Her side and one of her eyes got injured after she was hit by a truck outside their house. Thankfully, she was treated.

“I called her and she stopped and looked at me and she came running to me. She’s got the scar on one side. It tore up her eye. She’s still here, we got our girl back,” said Dubbs.

According to her, she will sell the Great Danes once they've "weaned from their mother" and donate the first puppy's proceeds to the Tazewell County Animal Shelter.

A normal litter size ranges from 1 to 12 puppies, but big dogs like Namine have larger litters.

Currently, the largest litter of puppies is at 24. Tia, a Neapolitan Mastiff, broke the Guinness world record by giving birth to 15 male puppies and 9 female puppies. They were born by Caesarian section in 2009.
