One of the most iconic monsters in pop culture will be introduced to a new generation. Disney+ is currently developing a live-action series exploring the origin of King Kong.

According to Variety, the series is based on the original King Kong film written by Merian C. Cooper and the new novelizations by Joe DeVito.

Stephany Folson, from the Amazon series Paper Girls, will write and executive produce the upcoming show. It will be a serialized action-adventure drama bringing King Kong into the modern age and will be looking back at his origins in Skull Island.

James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett will also be serving as executive producers on behalf of Atomic Monster, with Dannie Festa and Marc Manus for World Builder Entertainment.

King Kong first debuted in 1933 and has since become a pop culture phenomenon—many films have been made about the monster, including Son of Kong, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla vs. Kong, The Mighty Kong, King Kong Lives, and more.
